Pharmacy is a dynamic and ever-evolving profession that plays a vital role in the healthcare system by ensuring the safe, effective, and rational use of medicines. The present book on General Pharmacy has been written in accordance with the NEP 2020 curriculum implemented by the Pharmacy Council of India, New Delhi, for B.Pharm First Year, First Semester students. The content has been carefully structured to meet the academic requirements of undergraduate pharmacy students while also building a strong conceptual foundation for their future professional practice.
This book covers all the essential areas included in the syllabus, beginning with an introduction to the profession of pharmacy, its historical development in India, and its growth in relation to pharmacy education, pharmaceutical industries, and professional organizations. It also highlights the expanding scope of pharmacy in community, hospital, clinical, and industrial settings, including research and development roles. A clear understanding of pharmacopoeias, prescription handling, and pharmaceutical terminology has been provided to help students become familiar with standard professional practices.
Special emphasis has been given to pharmaceutical calculations, which form the backbone of accurate dispensing and dosage preparation. Concepts such as metric system, posology, isotonic solutions, and dilution techniques have been explained in a simple and student-friendly manner. The book also introduces dosage forms, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and excipients, focusing on their importance in formulation development.
Further, the book elaborates on solid, liquid, semisolid, monophasic, and biphasic dosage forms with their definitions, classification, advantages, disadvantages, formulation ingredients, and methods of preparation. Special attention has been given to commonly used dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, syrups, emulsions, suspensions, ointments, creams, gels, suppositories, and various liquid preparations for internal and external use. Each topic has been explained in a clear and systematic way to enhance understanding and retention.
The primary aim of this book is to simplify complex pharmaceutical concepts and present them in a concise yet comprehensive manner, making it suitable for beginners in pharmacy education. It is hoped that this book will serve as a valuable learning resource for students, helping them develop strong theoretical knowledge as well as practical insight into the field of pharmacy.
Dr. Rehan Uddin, M.Pharm., Ph.D., is an accomplished academician and prolific author with a Ph.D. in Pharmacy and around ten years of teaching experience. Currently serving as Professor and HOD at Sir Madanlal Institute of Pharmacy, Etawah (U.P.), he has authored about 50 textbooks in both English and Hindi for M. Pharm, B. Pharm, D. Pharm, and B.Sc. Nursing, as per PCI and INC syllabi. His contributions span across Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology and more. Renowned for his dedication to academic excellence and innovation in pharmaceutical sciences, he has been honored with prestigious awards including the “Youngest Author Award 2022” and “Best Book Author Award 2023” and “Excellence in Teaching and Education Award 2024”. His research on oral microemulsion-based drug delivery has led to a published patent, and he has authored numerous research and review articles in reputed journals. Rehan is passionate about advancing pharmaceutical education and empowering students through quality academic resources.
Amandeep Singh Randhawa, he is an academic and pharmacy professional serving as Assistant Professor at Axis Institute of Pharmacy, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. He brings a strong blend of teaching expertise and industry experience, with 10 years in academics and 13 years in pharmaceutical marketing. He completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy from K.L.E's College of Pharmacy and pursued his Master of Pharmacy in Pharmaceutics from Advance Institute of Biotech & Paramedical Sciences. Throughout his career, he has been actively engaged in academic development, mentoring students, and contributing to institutional growth. His interests include pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical marketing, and student-centered learning approaches. He continues to participate in various academic activities, workshops, and professional initiatives aimed at enhancing pharmacy education and bridging industry-academia gaps across India and internationally widely.
Dr. Sagar Singh, he is a distinguished academician, pharmacologist, and researcher in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. from LNCT University, Bhopal, and has made significant contributions to pharmaceutical education, research, and innovation. His scholarly achievements include numerous research and review publications in reputed SCI and Scopusindexed journals. Dr. Singh has authored and co-authored several textbooks and academic references for B.Pharm and D.Pharm programs, supporting pharmacy education nationwide. As an Innovation Ambassador under the Ministry of Education's Innovation Cell, he actively promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, and research-driven learning among students and faculty. Renowned for his expertise in pharmacology and commitment to academic excellence, Dr. Singh continues to inspire future healthcare professionals through teaching, mentorship, research, and impactful academic initiatives.
Dr. Sushant Kumar, he is a renowned academician serving as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics, Faculty of Pharmacy, Uttar Pradesh University of Medical Sciences (UPUMS), Saifai, Etawah. He has over 18 years of rich experience in teaching and research in pharmaceutical sciences. His areas of expertise include novel drug delivery systems, ear-to-brain drug targeting, drug development, and the isolation and characterization of biopolymers. He holds Ph.D., M.Pharm (Hons.), B.Pharm (Hons.), and D.Pharm qualifications. Dr. Kumar has contributed extensively to scientific literature with more than 30 national and international research publications, 7 patents, and 2 academic books to his credit. He is actively engaged in innovative research and academic advancement, focusing on advanced pharmaceutical technologies. He has also played an important role in strengthening research facilities, laboratory development, and overall pharmaceutical education at UPUMS, Saifai, Etawah, Uttar Pradesh.
