About Book

Nutrition for Optometry Students: A Competency-Based Approach (As per NCAHP Curriculum) is a comprehensive textbook designed to align with the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) syllabus for optometry education in India. The book bridges the foundational science of human nutrition with its specific clinical relevance to eye health, guiding students from basic concepts - food groups, energy metabolism, and dietary assessment - through to the nutritional dimensions of major ocular conditions, including dry eye disease, glaucoma, cataract, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.

Structured across ten chapters contributed by optometry educators and clinicians from institutions across India, the book combines mechanistic detail - oxidative stress, mitochondrial dys-function, and inflammaging- with practical, evidence-based guidance on nutraceuticals, supplementation safety, and personalized nutrition strategies. Each chapter includes a structured abstract, keywords, illustrative figures, and chapter-end assessment questions (MCQs and short/ medium/long-answer formats) mapped to Bloom’s Taxonomy, making it suitable for both classroom teaching and self-study.

Aimed at optometry students, educators, and practitioners, this is to the editors’ knowledge - the first textbook developed specifically around the NCAHP competency framework for nutrition in optometric education, positioning it as a foundational resource bridging nutrition science and clinical eye care practice.
