About Book

Biology of Marine Vertebrates present fundamental advances in our understanding of diverse group of animals, including fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals, that have adapted to life in saltwater environments. These vertebrates exhibit unique physiological and behavioural adaptations, reflecting their evolutionary history and ecological roles in marine ecosystems. Their biology is characterized by adaptations for aquatic locomotion, efficient oxygen uptake, and diverse feeding strategies, contributing to their dominance in many marine habitats. Vertebrate biology deals with the studies of anatomy, physiology, evolution, behavior, developmental aspects of all animals and the adaptations that are triggered by animals itself to safeguard them from threaten surrounding (jeopardize). Whereas Marine ecology is the scientific study of living organisms in the ocean and how they interact with their environment. It focuses on the interactions between organisms, populations, and communities, as well as the broader marine ecosystems and their biodiversity. It encompasses a wide range of topics, including the physical and chemical properties of seawater, the distribution and abundance of organisms, and the impact of human activities on marine environments. Combination of these two topics is perhaps the most fascinating subject as it deals with the chemical, biological and ecological language of life be it human or non-human. There are a few text books concerned to these topics on the market. Some of them are purely basic while others are applied, and there are very few books which cover both these aspects together. For this reason, the students learning marine biology, marine ecology and marine vertebrate’s biology in their postgraduate courses have to depend on multiple books to acquire a sound knowledge of the subject. This textbook is comprehensively written to meet the curriculum requirements of postgraduate courses in biological oceanography, marine biology, ocean-life-sciences and other categories where students learn these topics as one of the subjects.

This book is designed to develop in students a sustained interest and enthusiasm to learn and develop the concepts included in a logical and stepwise manner. It incorporates a variety of colour illustrations to help the students understand the subject quickly and to the maximum. The entire book was written in the day hours. After a sound sleep without any academic haste, a fresh mind packed with creative ideas and innovative thoughts, has largely helped me to write this book. This textbook is a distillation of my knowledge and teaching experience in ecology, embryology and biology of chordates and contains predigested information for good understanding, assimilation and reproducibility. Each page is crafted with a fine eye. The ultimate purpose of this book is to equip the reader with comprehensive knowledge in topics covered in this book with reference to basic as well as applied aspects.
