About Book

The medical laboratory is where much of modern medicine begins. A blood smear, a culture plate or a single biochemistry value may decide whether a patient receives treatment, a transfusion or simple reassurance. Those who work in the laboratory therefore need more than technical skill. They need to understand the health system they serve, the design and organisation of the laboratory, the safe handling of hazardous material, the language in which clinicians write and speak, the rules that govern the profession and the records that make every result trustworthy. And because emergencies do not respect job descriptions, they also need to know what to do when a patient collapses in the collection room.

This book brings these foundations together in two parts and eleven chapters. Part I (Chapters 1–6) covers the healthcare delivery system in India, the clinical laboratory, laboratory safety and biomedical waste, medical terminology, regulatory bodies including the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, and records, reports and electronic health records. Part II (Chapters 7–11) covers first aid in common emergencies, shock, poisoning, the chain of survival and vital signs, and basic life support.

In preparing this edition I have tried to write the way a good teacher talks: plainly, with examples from Indian hospitals and laboratories, and with a clear reason for every rule. Each chapter opens with a short scenario that shows why the topic matters, and closes with a summary and review questions of several types. Tables, flowcharts and infographics are used generously, because a picture of a process is often easier to remember than a paragraph about it. The content has been brought up to date with recent developments: the 2025 American Heart Association resuscitation guidelines, ISO 15189:2022, the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, the NCAHP registration regulations, the latest Sample Registration System and National Health Accounts data, and the expansion of Ayushman Bharat.

I hope students will read this book alongside visits to working laboratories, hands-on practice on manikins and at the bench, and the latest official documents. Suggestions from teachers and students for improving the next edition are most welcome.
