Pharmacognosy is a vital and rapidly evolving branch of pharmaceutical sciences concerned with drugs obtained from natural sources such as plants, animals, microorganisms, marine organisms, and minerals. It also encompasses modern biotechnological techniques like plant tissue culture for enhancing and producing bioactive compounds. This book, Introduction to Pharmacognosy is prepared according to the B.Pharm syllabus prescribed by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) as per NEP 2020. It aims to provide students with a strong foundation in basic concepts, historical development, drug sources, cultivation and processing techniques, quality control methods, and key phytotherapeutic agents used in modern and traditional systems of medicine.
The book highlights landmark drug discoveries such as morphine, quinine, aspirin, penicillin, and taxol, which have significantly contributed to modern therapeutics. It emphasizes Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP), WHO guidelines, conservation strategies, and ecopharmacognosy for sustainable use of medicinal plants.
It also includes pharmacopoeias, classification of crude drugs, quality control parameters, DNA barcoding, and detailed coverage of major phytotherapeutic agents. This book serves as a comprehensive learning resource for undergraduate pharmacy students, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications in pharmacognosy.
Dr. Rehan Uddin, M.Pharm., Ph.D., is an accomplished academician and prolific author with a Ph.D. in Pharmacy and around ten years of teaching experience. Currently serving as Professor and HOD at Sir Madanlal Institute of Pharmacy, Etawah (U.P.), he has authored about 50 textbooks in both English and Hindi for M. Pharm, B. Pharm, D. Pharm, and B.Sc. Nursing, as per PCI and INC syllabi. His contributions span across Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology and more. Renowned for his dedication to academic excellence and innovation in pharmaceutical sciences, he has been honored with prestigious awards including the “Youngest Author Award 2022” and “Best Book Author Award 2023” and “Excellence in Teaching and Education Award 2024”. His research on oral microemulsion-based drug delivery has led to a published patent, and he has authored numerous research and review articles in reputed journals. Rehan is passionate about advancing pharmaceutical education and empowering students through quality academic resources.
Dr. Abdul Baseer Khan, He is an Associate Professor in the College of Pharmacy, Integral University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, with fifteen years of teaching experience in pharmaceutical sciences. He completed his Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Integral University, after earning his B. Pharm and M. Pharm degrees in Pharmacognosy from Al-Ameen College of Pharmacy, Bangalore, Karnataka. His strong academic background reflects his dedication to the field and his consistent pursuit of excellence. He has published five research and review papers in reputed journals, contributing to scientific knowledge in pharmacognosy. He has also participated in more than twenty-five conferences, seminars, and faculty development programs, demonstrating his commitment to academic enrichment and professional advancement. Over the years, he has written several textbooks for B. Pharm and D. Pharm students, making valuable contributions to pharmacy education through his lucid writing style, comprehensive coverage of topics, and learner-oriented presentation.
Neha Singh is currently working as an Assistant Professor at Axis Institute of Pharmacy. She completed her Master of Pharmacy (M.Pharm.) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Advanced College of Biotech & Paramedical Sciences, Kanpur. She has more than 10 review publications and 5 research papers in reputed journals. She has actively participated in numerous national and international conferences and seminars. Before entering academics, she worked at HCL Technologies, Noida, as an Application Specialist in the corporate sector. Analysis and development of combination drugs is one of her major research interests. She is dedicated to academic excellence, innovation in pharmaceutical sciences, and mentoring future pharmacy professionals effectively with strong commitment always.
Riya Mathur is serving as an Assistant Professor at Axis Institute of Pharmacy with over five years of experience in pharmaceutical education and research. She has been actively engaged in teaching, mentoring students, academic administration, and research in pharmaceutical sciences. She is a dedicated academician with strong expertise in pharmacy and allied health sciences education. Mrs. Mathur has authored and co-authored several books for pharmacy and nursing students, appreciated for their practical approach, conceptual clarity, and student-friendly presentation. She has published numerous review articles and research papers in reputed Scopus-indexed journals. Her research interests include pharmaceutical sciences, drug delivery systems, medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, healthcare advancements, and interdisciplinary medical research. She continues to contribute to evidence-based academic practices and inspires students through teaching and scholarly work.
