Pharmacognosy is the study of natural crude drugs obtained from natural origin with numerous medicinal properties. It has always occupied a foundational place in the pharmaceutical sciences. As modern medicine continues to evolve, the relevance of natural sources, especially plants, in the discovery and development of therapeutic agents remains undiminished. In fact, the growing interest in integrative and complementary medicine underscores the enduring importance of this field. This book has been written to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date resource on pharmacognosy, bridging classical knowledge with current scientific advancements. It is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate students of pharmacy, pharmacology, botany, and related disciplines, as well as researchers and practitioners who seek a deeper understanding of natural drug sources and their applications. The chapters are organized to guide the reader from fundamental concepts— such as the history, scope, and classification of crude drugs—to more advanced topics, including phytochemical screening, analytical techniques, and the pharmacological potential of key medicinal plants. Emphasis has also been placed on sustainable sourcing, quality control, and the global regulatory frameworks governing herbal medicines. This work is the result of years of academic engagement, research, and a deep appreciation for the intricate relationship between nature and medicine. It is my hope that this book will not only serve as a learning tool, but also inspire further inquiry into the rich world of pharmacognosy and natural drug discovery.
Dr. Shweta Jain did her graduation, from Sagar Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Sagar in year 2009, Post graduation from Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur in year 2011 and Ph.D from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow in year 2024. She Qualified GPAT exam in year 2015 with AIR 2282.Dr. Jain has a teaching and research experience of more than 14 years and is currently working as Professor and HOD in Sir Madanlal Institute of Pharmacy, Etawah (U.P.) India. Dr. Shweta Jain has a key research interest in plant extract, isolation and herbal nanoformulation and published around 30 outstanding publications in various International journals with google scholar citation 1487, cumulative impact factor (I.F.; TR) of 50.2; h-index of 18 and i-10 index of 25.Dr. Jain has credited as reviewer of international journals of repute in the field of Pharmaceutical sciences. Dr. Jain has published, 2 patents, 15 International book chapters, 3 National books and 1 International book. Dr. Shweta has participated/presented in various National and International conferences and received Best teacher award (Pharma) by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow, U.P., on 05th September, 2021.
Dr. Zeba Siddiqui is an Associate Professor at Amity University, Gwalior, with over 15 years of experience in teaching and research in pharmaceutical sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry, an M.Pharm from Jamia Hamdard, and a B.Pharm from Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar.She has authored more than 20 research papers in reputed national and international journals, holds a patent, and has contributed to several book chapters. She is also the author of one published book, reflecting her commitment to academic scholarship and knowledge dissemination.Her work focuses on natural product research, pharmacy education, and capacity-building initiatives, making her a recognized contributor to the advancement of pharmaceutical sciences.
