Research is an essential part of allied health education and professional practice. It helps students learn how to identify problems, examine evidence, evaluate interventions, and improve health services. This textbook is written for undergraduate and postgraduate allied health students. It explains the research process from the beginning of a problem to the final research report. The chapters are arranged in a logical sequence so that learners can move from basic concepts to research design, data collection, analysis, thesis writing, publication, and evidence-based practice.
The language is intentionally simple, but the content remains academically sound. Examples are drawn from optometry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, laboratory sciences, and related disciplines. The aim is to make research feel practical, relevant, and achievable for students.
Dr. T.S. Muthukumar, MPT (Cardio-Respiratory), PhD, is a physiotherapy educator, researcher, and academic leader with over 20 years of experience after postgraduation. He currently serves as Dean of Allied Health Sciences at SMVEC School of Allied Health Sciences Puducherry. Previously, he was Principal of Revathi Institute of Physiotherapy and Research, and Professor and Head of Department at JSS College of Physiotherapy, Mysuru, and SRIPMS, Coimbatore. He has also taught at Lovely Professional University and MAHSA University, Malaysia.
A specialist in cardio-respiratory physiotherapy, Dr. Muthukumar has authored 25 publications, holds several patents and copyrights, and has contributed to funded research projects. He serves on journal editorial boards, reviews for scientific journals, and acts as an examiner and Board of Studies member for leading universities. His contributions to physiotherapy education have been recognized with numerous awards. A Life Member of the Indian Association of Physiotherapists, he is passionate about team building, research, and nurturing the next generation of physiotherapists and allied health students.
Dr. V. Velkumar, MPT (Cardiorespiratory), is an Associate Professor at Sri Manakula Vinayagar School of Physiotherapy, Puducherry. He possesses over 15 years of clinical experience alongside more than 10 years in academic teaching. A recognized researcher with 20 peer-reviewed publications, institutional research grants, and registered copyrights to his credit, Dr. Velkumar remains dedicated to translational research and evidence-based cardiorespiratory physiotherapy.
